The Arc’teryx Sperro SV gives Zero f**ks about compromising on circularity
Answering the tricky question ‘How do you make the lifecycle of a product fully circular without any compromise on it’s quality, repairability or longevity?’ comes System 0 from Arc’teryx. No longer just designing for the mountains, they’re also designing to protect them now via a revolutionary approach to design that builds end-of-life thinking into every stage of the product. From initial material selection right through to the manufacturing process, these evolutionary Arc’teryx products are designed to be disassembled and remade with recycled, recoverable materials. Carefully considering all three stages of a product’s life (materials sourcing, durability, and end of life) Arc’teryx’s new five-step framework includes finding preferred recycled materials, designing for maximum durability, prioritising repairability through ReBIRB, simplifying circular behaviour, and chemically recycling materials to close the loop.
What’s more, they’ve kicked off the program with arguably the most complex piece that they could apply this system to, a hardshell jacket. Launching on the 4th of September, the first product that sits within System 0, is a multisport jacket called the Sperro SV, a Gore-Tex hardshell that’s certified by TESTEX Circularity, and is the first product in the line that can be broken down at the chemical level. Extensively tested by Alpine professionals and designed for maximum durability across skiing, snowboarding, alpine climbing, and harsh-condition movement, there is zero comprising on performance. As Chief Creative Officer of Arc’teryx Kate Becker explained:
“At Arc’teryx, we design products to perform for the long-term. System 0 asks us to think even bigger. It represents a mindset shift for our entire design team and a powerful evolution in how we innovate. We deliberately started with one of the hardest problems – a hardshell, the most complex product we make. If we can solve circularity here, we believe we can apply what we learn across our entire system. And we know we’re just getting started.”
But anyway, have a watch of this ace video below that beautifully showcases exactly what System 0 is all about.
