Reimagining Mallory with Montane & the Turner Twins
To mark the passing of over a hundred years since Mallory and Irvine’s fateful final ascent, Montane has partnered up with legendary adventurers Hugo and Ross Turner to tackle the Mera Peak together. The inspired concept being to kit one of them out in Montane’s cutting edge technical gear whilst the other brother gets to make the same climb decked out in accurate replica gear worn in the 1924 Everest expedition. Following the spirit of George & Sandy by turning Nepal’s highest trekking mountain into a controlled high-altitude testing ground for a once-in-a-century expedition – one where scientific research meets a reimagining of one of mountaineering’s most enduring stories. As alongside the climbing team a group of researchers & scientists will be investigating the performance of the
100-year-old expedition gear. Using the results to help answer the multifaceted question of what exactly has changed in the 100 years since those first attempts to summit Everest, as well as what has remained the same.
“We want to experience the mountain with the same mindset as Mallory did, to understand
the clothing systems, and highlight some never-before-revealed scientific data. Mera Peak
gives us the altitude and exposure to test that, safely but authentically,” – Hugo Turner.
This unique expedition is run in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth’s Extreme Environments Laboratory, a well renowned resource for studying human limits under harsh conditions. Whilst the real-time physiological data will be collected from both climbers, including body temperature, cognitive performance, cortisol levels (associated with stress), dexterity and clothing durability, offering a rare comparative insight into how gear may have affected Mallory’s chances of survival and summit success in 1924. Whilst we think this is a truly incredible thing to do, on a much more fickle tip, we here at Outdoor Licence would also like to know which fit the scientists think would also look best down the pub too?
