Introducing Utu Outdoor Skincare
Whether you’re a skier, a surfer, a climber or a cyclist, the chances are that you have loads of expensive kit that protect you from the elements whilst enjoying your various outdoor adventures. Though you may well have all that good stuff like a life straw, an emergency blanket and a GPS system there’s also a good chance that there’s a bit of a gap in your armoury when it comes to sunscreen and skincare, either that or just a bucket hat. Which, when you think about it, is kind of ridiculous isn’t it? Well fortunately for us outdoor types, Utu is a brand new brand from California that delivers high-performance, beauty-grade protection designed specifically for those who live, train, and thrive outdoors. Based on a very simple but overlooked truth — that sun protection is not seasonal, but foundational to skin health — Utu brings together mineral SPF, advanced skincare actives, and real-world performance to meet the demands of modern outdoor lifestyles. Designed to combat daily exposure to UV, wind, altitude, pollution, and temperature extremes, I was lucky enough to test it out on our recent Outdoor Licence hike out in the Peak with Purple Mountain Observatory. Not usually one for considering skincare before a hike (apart from the odd dab of lip balm in the winter and a bit of factor 20 when it’s really hot) I applied some Utu SPF 30 face suncreen and stashed a tin of hydrating sun balm in my backpack for back up. Still not sure there was any real need for this on such an overcast morning my decision was confirmed as being the right one when the sun appeared out of the clouds as we approached Hayfield. Just prior to which, my new mate and fellow passenger Steve had somewhat serendipitously told me he’d successfully had a skin cancer removal operation on his face just two years ago. Nice timing Ste (he’s fine now btw and gets regular check ups).
Suffice to say the Utu gear got put through it’s paces on a textbook Peak District day that had everything from bright sunshine to biting winds all of which was rounded off with a nice hour’s worth of relentless torrential rain. Clearly a quality product, I could tell my face was still protected by Utu despite being exposed to everything that nature could throw at it (bar a bit of snow) but without that super annoying feeling that your face is caked in something and can’t breathe. The reason for which being that unlike traditional sunscreens, Utu’s formulas are fragrance-free, mineral-based, and powered by skincare- grade ingredients — including hyaluronic acid, sea buckthorn, squalane, and antioxidants — to protect, hydrate, and actively repair the skin barrier. So take it from me, a bloke who pretty much takes his skin for granted and never really bothers with sunscreen whilst out on the hills, Utu is the product that we didn’t know we all needed.
