Alez Zono presents ‘Running Is My Best Friend’

This is a cosy watch for those of you’ve who’ve had a busy week and need something soothing on the eyes to sit back and watch on a Friday afternoon. It’s a short film that follows the Journey of South African designer Alex ‘I Dig Running’ Zono and his mates Carla Molinaro and Sophie Yates as they embark on the Black Canyon Ultra Marathon whilst wearing Alex’s eponymous brand. After planning to do the race solo, Alex then discovered his close friend and equally avid runner, Carla, had also applied successfully, followed by Sophie and thus tripling the size of Zono’s preliminary running clan. He then enlisted the help of two further friends to document the adventure, and one more to coordinate all social media content; turning up on location eventually with an 8-strong army. Setting out with intentions of producing a documentary packed with legitimate joy, capturing the fun at every turn and without actually feeling like another cheesy running film. Injecting a sense of fun and authenticity into the 50km, predominantly downhill, cross-country scramble that starts at Masson High School running track before heading through Arizona’s Sonoran Desert and Black Canyon City to reach the finish line near New River. A stretch that caters to those with an affinity to speed, incentivised by a dangling carrot that takes shape as a golden ticket to qualify for the Western States Endurance Run; a.k.a, the world’s oldest 100 mile trail race. Spoiler Alert: Alex finished in just over four hours, claiming 39th spot overall whilst Carla came 9th in the women’s standings, and Sophie in the top 30. Check out the film, which, just like an Omega Seamaster, is a lovely watch.
