Take a short but stunning walk with Cicerone
Much as I enjoy going for a gentle hike with nothing to guide us but our sense of adventure and/or about £500 worth of GPS technology, sometimes you really can’t beat a guidebook for telling you where to go. This is where our mates at Cicerone come in, because they make some of the best guides out there at the moment and have just released a load of new titles in their excellent Short Walks guide. Having a particular soft spot for the Peak District (albeit the Dark side), I plumped for the 15 Short Walks in Bakewell and the White peak title which is a beautifully put together pocket sized tome you could easily slip into the side pocket of your shorts or bum bag. Yes, that’s right I said bum bag and not hip pack. Anyway, the book covers some cracking routes including Outdoor Licence favourites Baslow/Curbar Edge as well as Monsal head tunnel and viaduct, which was also the scene of a fairly recent Blossoms video shoot too don’t you know? Alongside a map each of the walks give clear and concise details on the time/distance, available transport links and nearby pubs/cafes, locals points of interest and highlights as well as the odd historical or geological fact. A cracking bit of kit to have at hand when you’re looking for inspiration or just tired of doing the same routes, I take my hat off to author Andrew McCloy and the Cicerone team for making such user friendly collection of easy to follow yet brilliant guide books.
