66°North celebrate their centenary by way of Björk, Bebba & some banging jackets

Celebrating their centenary in signature Icelandic style, 66°North have released a tangible timeline of ten products. Each of which represent a different decade from the brand’s unique history, drawing directly from the extensive archive and brought into the present via their contemporary design team. Originating in 1926 in order to create protective clothing for fishermen in the North Atlantic, 66°North has evolved alongside Iceland, moving from specialist workwear to becoming a part of everyday Icelandic life and wardrobes. Each of the new pieces in the capsule revisits an iconic garment that’s taken from a defining period in the brand’s history and modelled by Icelandic people who have helped shaped the brand, such as designer Bergþóra Guðnadóttir (AKA Bebba).

“Reaching 100 years gives us a unique opportunity to look back at the collections, people and ideas that have shaped 66°North. The 100-Year Capsule is a celebration of our evolution. Each piece has its own story, but they are all connected by the same purpose that has guided us from the beginning – creating clothing that is made to last,” notes Bjarney Harðardóttir, Chief Brand Officer & Co-owner, 66°North.

This century spanning capsule runs from the 1926 Slippurinn Anorak (reimagined in GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER) through to the 2016–2026 Snæfell Shell Jacket, crafted from Polartec Power Shield Pro that comes in an orange colourway that pays homage to the original fisherman’s coat. Whilst in between sits the Bylur Sweater, Arnarhóll Coat, Ægissíða Rain Coat, Greni Overall, Kría Colourblock Shell Jacket, Tindur Down Jacket, Þórsmörk Parka and the brand’s classic headwear. Whilst the Greni Overall (affectionnately known in Iceland as the kuldagalli) was the uniform of Icelandic teenagers in the 1980s, with Björk being among its most influential wearers. Though imminently wearable, each of these items are also instant collectors items, with each garment carrying a specially developed woven label that notes the style as well as the decade that it represents.
