
Garmin unveils a totally tactical new smartwatch
Just when you think that the Q levels of boffinery at Garmin couldn’t get any higher, alongs comes the new tactix 8 smartwatch with its built-in speaker and mic! Designed to be able to take phone calls (when paired with a compatible smartphone) the tactix also allows for voice commands like “start a hiking activity”, “set a timer for 5 minutes”, “save waypoint” that can be activated directly from the watch with no phone connection required. Constructed with a super titanium bezel and scratch-resistant sapphire lens this smarter than the average smartwatch also has a 40-meter dive-rated case as well as support for scuba and apnea dive activities. Though if rucking is more your bag it features a new dedicated activity profile too that lets users input pack weight in order to better understand the impact of physical exertion. Whilst a new pack weight feature also allows users to add pack weight to various activities like trail running, hiking and walking too. Add to that AMOLED displays or a permanently on display solar charged options both models feature refreshed graphics and come in 51mm or new 47mm case sizes. Preloaded with Applied Ballistics (AB) Ultralight solver and are compatible with the new AB Quantum app users can also view terrain contours via TopoActive maps for a better understanding of terrain. On top of all that new tech there’s also an integrated map interface where you can customise map layers and enter a distance on the watch to receive suggested routes with dynamic round-trip routing. It’s also got a night time stealth mode and will help you land a plane at the nearest airport with a Direct-to-Navigation feature amongst other additional mind-blowing GPS related details.
